Scout Inn

Yahoo + Amplify at SXSW.

Challenge

At SXSW, Yahoo Scout Inn marked a milestone: the brand's biggest activation at SXSW to date, and its first owned, consumer-facing experience.

The brief raised three questions at once:

  1. How do you invite a new audience to reposition the Yahoo brand and its place in culture?
  2. How do you frame the technical innovation of Yahoo Scout, a new AI-powered answer engine, in a way that feels approachable rather than technical?
  3. And where do contemporary coolness and nostalgic authenticity meet?

Insight + Strategy

Grounded in an understanding of what a Gen Z audience actually wants from a brand, Yahoo was positioned as a live experience celebrating its legacy rather than being defined by it. Instead of over-explaining the product or forcing relevance through traditional tech messaging, the strategy earned attention through culture first, lowering the barrier to entry. Anchored in the creative credo It's Good to Be a Yahoo, the approach reframed the brand as something to rediscover, tapping into curiosity, nostalgia, and the idea of the internet as a fun, welcoming place to be.

Solution

Amplify took over Austin's iconic Scoot Inn and transformed it into Yahoo Scout Inn, featuring an immersive, western-inspired brand experience running March 14–15. Yahoo Scout Inn was built around activations and curated programming, including a headline performance by Jessie Murph and a high-energy DJ set from Austin's own Dirty Texans. At its center sat the first physical outpost of Yahoo Scout: a western-inspired shop stocked with custom merch. Guests decorated cowboy hats, threw horseshoes, and saddled up for photo moments, while an open bar kept fresh margaritas flowing in the Austin heat and curated lounges gave guests a place to gather and connect.

The experience extended beyond the venue itself, driving awareness to the space. Brand ambassadors in head-to-toe purple and "Ask Yahoo Scout" t-shirts appeared across Austin's main streets and airport, posing starter questions like "Where is the best party at SXSW?" and "I have one night left, Rainey St. or East Austin?" to introduce passersby to the platform, with QR codes driving traffic back to Yahoo Scout.

On Sunday, Austin fitness influencer Jenna Palek led a sold-out "Saddle Up & Sculpt" class, a special edition of her Barre to Brunch series, fueled by JuiceLand and Tacodeli.

Inside the Inn, guests could also test Yahoo Scout's financial insights or use it to build an NCAA March Madness bracket for Bracket Mayhem.

The event leaned fully into a spirit of exploration and rediscovery. Set against a backdrop that fused vintage-modern western charm with a distinctly contemporary edge, Yahoo Scout Inn balanced nostalgia with cultural relevance, drawing a Gen Z crowd unlike any other activation at SXSW, a showcase of Yahoo's evolving brand and product ecosystem through culture, music, and hands-on experience.
