In this series, AdNews spotlights young talent in the Australian media, marketing and advertising sector. This time it's Amplify's project coordinator Domenic Scriva.
Time in current role:
One Year
How long have you been in the industry?
One Year!
How did you get here? Was this always the plan?
This was definitely not always the plan. I trained as an actor in Perth (Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts) and had been working in Sydney as an actor and playwright for a couple years before I landed my role at Amplify. I was looking for something to challenge me and marketing had always been something I was interested in. I came across Flaunt Recruitment and they introduced me to Amplify, and the rest is history.
Who is your right-hand person?
The one and only Aaron Bilham, our Executive Producer. In the brief time I have been a part of the marketing agency world, Aaron has taught me so much about production and brand experience - I’m definitely asking him questions all the time. The whole team at Amplify is hugely supportive and I feel so lucky to have a team that cares so much for my growth.
What is the best thing about the industry you work in?
The audiences that come to see our work. There's just nothing like the feeling after months of labouring over details, stressing about deadlines and wondering if it’s all going to work - to then see the joy some of our events bring to people’s faces, it’s priceless. A recent example of this is the VIVID Sydney activation we did for Samsung. To see people’s faces light up when they saw themselves on the mammoth LED pillars, it was so special.
And the biggest challenge?
Time … never enough time. I’m definitely someone who loves to be busy and that is why I love this work, but when deadlines start stacking up across multiple projects it always gets a little stressful.
Whose job have you set your sights on in the future?
I’m not sure I have the answer to this. I have many interests and with the work I’m doing at Amplify, I’m seeing how brand experience is such a powerful storytelling tool. I’m hoping to find the magic job that combines my creative and production skills and interests.
Where do you turn for inspiration?
Music and Fandom is a big inspiration for me. As a die-hard Lady Gaga fan (Little Monsters as they’re formally known) I know first-hand how powerful storytelling in music is, even beyond the songs themselves. For creative inspiration I’d say Beyoncé and Lady Gaga are the artists I look to the most.
My favourite advert is:
My favourite recent advert was a campaign done at AMC theatres in the US for Freakier Friday (Disney). They rolled out Popcorn buckets that looked like drink cups and drink cups that looked like popcorn buckets - simple but effective!
Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you?
One of my most-watched movies is Louis Theroux’s My Scientology Movie (2015). I love Louis Theroux, and I love documentaries, it’s one of my favourites.
In five years’, time I will be:
Finding the perfect balance between my creative endeavours and my production prowess.
