The Great Cake Escape

Cultural insight

What started off as a one-off birthday treat, has ended up in world cup cake domination (well... sort of).  Cake enthusiasts Cherry Bakewell and Fondant Fancy (aka Nikki Shaill and Lorraine Williams) are the founders of guerrilla art project The Great Cake Escape that has seen London decorated in an array of wonderfully colourful cakes, each with its own personal message and free for anyone to pick up and pop in their mouth.

The cakes have been spotted around the city as part of a giant treasure hunt, featured at Kate Moss’s birthday party this year, graced Bestival and much, much more. Their motto is: “No longer shall we cakes remain confined in cupboards... We are destined to escape this kitsch kitchen! Our only respite the occasional decadent tea party... We crave a life of adventure. We dream of adorning this greying urban utopia with sugar-coated splendidness”.
